Warm Welcome to Canadian JPC Daniel Ducai at UNDPs LRP Unit.

Left-Right:  UNDP’s Livelihood Recovery for Peace Project (LRP) Technical Advisor, Mr. Chiranjibi Adhikari provided a warm welcome to Canadian JPC Daniel Ducai, alongside UNDPs Assistant Country Director, Mme. Heema Khadka before he departed to his duty station in Janakpur.

Background on UNDPs LRP

The 20 southern plains districts of Nepal (or ‘Madhesh’) which border India are where most of Nepal’s productive farmland, valuable forests and industrial base are located. In spite of this wealth, many inhabitants live in poverty and suffer from serious socioeconomic disadvantages. The long-standing grievances of the people of this area came to the surface in early 2007 as the “Madhesh Andolan” (uprising) disrupted life across the area with violence between the hill and Madheshi people. Many of the grievances have yet to be addressed and the area is characterized by frequent strikes and shutdowns (bandhs) and weak law and order.

In 2009, UNDP’s Livelihood Recovery for Peace Project (LRP) was launched in the three poorest and most conflict-affected districts of the Tarai. Sarlahi, Mahottari and Rautahat are the districts where poverty, conflict and natural disasters most hinder development. The 1.7 million people of this area have a mixed makeup with 40% from traditionally disadvantaged groups.

We thank UNDP Nepal for its' ongoing cooperation with UNA-Canada and the opportunities afforded to our JPCs...good luck Daniel!

Daniel Ducai holds an MA in Human Security & Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University.
