Ryan Talks Gender Equality in Tanzania

Former JPC Ryan is currently working in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as a resource mobiliization and public affairs officer.  His employer, Equality for Growth (EfG), is a Tanzanian based NGO working to reduce gender based violence in local markets which provides legal services to women working in the informal sector.  Through this, they are working to reduce gender inequality in Tanzania, while also helping markets to expand and become more economically prosperous.

Ryan’s role at EfG is multifaceted, involving project design, grant writing, monitoring and evaluation and communications work, with the focus of his work changing regularly based on the current phase of the project cycle and the changing needs of EfG.  These varied tasks (as well as the opportunity to learn Swahili) are providing him with a great learning experience, as well as the opportunity to utilise the skills he acquired as a JPC.  The diversity of the tasks Ryan was assigned as a JPC, as well his improved multitasking and organizational skills, have allowed Ryan to quickly and effectively step into his new role at EfG.

Ryan was a JPC in Bangkok, Thailand from September 2015 to February 2016, working as a communications officer for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).  His work at UNODC involved helping to organize events, manage social media accounts and redesign the UNODC SEAP website. He was also provided the opportunity to be a part of the team which developed communications strategies for major UNODC events and publication launches.
Ryan attained his position at EfG through Global Affair’s International Youth Internship Programme (IYIP).  Getting accepted to this prestigious programme was possible thanks to the experience Ryan acquired as a JPC.  His current position is allowing him to work directly in community development and to gain an understanding of the local context of development work.  Ryan’s work at EfG, combined with his experience as a JPC, will provide a solid platform through which he can work towards his goal of having a career working abroad in international development.
